Waimate, in the Waitaki region, is close to the traditional border between Canterbury and Otago regions.

Waimate- Waitaki is a farming area, with excellent livestock grazing.
Joseph Maberly settled in Waimate (1887-1893)after moving from Christchurch with his family after immigration.
He last is listed in 1899 on the Waitaki electoral register, the year his wife died, although he was buried in
Dannevirke in the North Island.

Joseph, a carpenter emigrated to the USA in 1851-52, married and his first child was born there. He then returned
to England before emigrating to NZ via Australia in the early 1860's.
He raised his family in Waimate, before heading to Temuka (1908), Christchurch (1911), then crossing to Wellington (1914).
Alfred was raised in Waimate, before heading to Auckland after World War I.
Harold served in World War I, and was killed in France.
