The Mapleys in Tauranga area, NZ

Early Tauranga, Bay of Plenty

Tauranga is the 5th most populous city in NZ, and the now the busiest port located on the Bay of Plenty.

After the Land Wars with the Maoris (1845 - 1872, many settlers had abandoned the region around Tauranga, but the flow of settlers migrating to NZ caused the population to increase rapidly on the North Island. As a result, there was strong demand for teachers, who were recruited from England.

Tauranga area was represented by the Ohinemuri electorate (1891-1908). George and Mary Ellen settled in in the area after emigrating from England. 1902-1905 they moved to Auckland, leaving Charles and his wife Louisa Emily (nee De Silva). Charles died in 1910, Louisa stayed locally in the Tauranga/Bay of Plenty area.
