Elijah Mapley, of Great Woolstone but living in nearby Great Linford, moved from Buckinghamshire in the 1850/60's after his
father died when he was very young and his mother re-married. He initially worked in the local coal mines until
establishing himself as a shoe and boot maker. He married Ellen Machin from Steveley, and his sons and daughters remained
in the area, with the sons all working for the collieries.
