The Mapley family in Australia

New Norfolk, Tasmania

Richard was 5'4", a Protestant, could read and write, and was a farmer from Great Linford, Buckinghamshire in England. He was the son of William Mapley (1779-1851) and Hannah (1778-). He married Fanny Goss (1808-1878). His 11 children were Sarah, Joseph, Thomas, John, Joshua, Jane, Sarah, Fanny, Mary Anne, Hannah and Thomas.

Richard was sentenced to 10 years for stealing a sheep. He was tried at Aylesbury, Bucks. and transported to Hobart in Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) on Mount Stuart Elphinstone, departing 26/2/1845 and arriving 19/6/1845.

He served 4 years of his sentence before his conditional pardon. He sent for his family, who arrived on the William Jardine on 26/8/1849 (Sarah, Thomas & John died before 1844) from Great Linford. They all arrived in Hobart, but settled up the Derwent River in nearby New Norfolk, where Richard died 2 years later in 1851.

His children populated the New Norfolk area to such an extent that Mapley Road in Lachlan was named after the families.

From New Norfolk the Mapleys spread to Hobart, the State capital, then north with a developing timber industry on the north coast - they then crossed to the mainland, and we see Mapleys first in Victoria, then South Australia, Queensland etc..
