The village, 2 miles west of Little Linford, started out in life as a castle belonging to the lord of the manor of
nearby Hanslope. Castlethorpe Castle was constructed in the 11/12th century. In 1066 William I granted the manor of
Hanslope to Winemar the Fleming, who built the fortifications. In 1086 it was in the hundred of Bunsty and ownership
was the same. Following the revolt against King John, the castle was demolished in 1217.
The Church of St Simon and St Jude, the parish church, dates back to Anglo-Saxon times, though the present church is of mainly
Norman design. The church at Castlethorpe was originally superior to that of Hanslope but Bishop Grosteste changed the
precedence in about 1250.
Castlethorpe had a station (until 1964) on the main London-Birmingham line of the LNWR running alongside the west side of Castlethorpe. Being 2.5 miles north of Wolverton and the Railworks, many residents worked at the railworks. The Grand Union Canal also runs by on the outskirts of the village, a short walk to the neighbouring village of Cosgrove.
