In 1974 Rutland, a small but separate county, was merged into Leics. Rutland had records of Mableys/Mapleys as early as
1389 when Agnes Mably received a will bequest. In 1490 & 1507 William Mabley was a licensed ale brewer in Langham,
his son John a licensed ale taster. The local Langham well water was said to give the beer a unique character and
quality which enhanced the brewery's reputation, ultimatelt becoming the Ruddles Brewery. From the mid-1550's a larger
family cluster was recorded in the village, which after 2 generations morphed from Mabley to Mapley in the 1660's.
Frederick Mapley, born in Great Linford, settled in Market Harborough in the late 1870's, with his family
generations established there.
